• 1 May - The seat of the South African Republic government is officially transferred from Potchefstroom to Pretoria
• 4 May - The Orange Free State signs a peace treaty with Moshoeshoe I at Wittebergen, near Winburg, ending the first Basuto War

• 26 June - The Natal Railway Company opens the first railway line in South Africa, the 3,2km railway line ran from the township of Durban down to Cato Creek and then along the side of the harbour to the Point, Durban

• 17 September - The Alfred Dock in Table Bay, Cape Town is officially opened by sixteen year old Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, second son of Queen Victoria
