This was the first Grand Final in the history of the AFL to be played by two non-Victorian teams; Port Adelaide's first; and the Brisbane Lions' fourth consecutive.

Following the match, Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams was quite animated, his celebrations including a speech on the dais, where he uttered the now-famous words of "Allan Scott - you were wrong!". This was in reference to a comment made by Scott (a sponsor of the Port Adelaide Football Club) earlier in the 2004 season, in which he said the club could not win a premiership under the coaching of Williams. Williams also mimed choking by holding his tie up like a noose as he stepped onto the arena, a reference to the breaking of Port Adelaide's reputation as "chokers", which they had gained after losing in several previous finals series, despite having dominated the home and away seasons.

Total match attendance for all games was 5,915,407 people. Attendance at the Grand Final was 77,671 people. The largest non-finals attendance was 60,898 people for the Collingwood v Carlton game of Round 22.

• The Brownlow Medal was awarded to Chris Judd of West Coast.
• The Leigh Matthews Trophy was awarded to Nick Riewoldt of St Kilda.
• The Coleman Medal was awarded to Fraser Gehrig of St Kilda.
• The Norm Smith Medal was awarded to Byron Pickett of Port Adelaide.
• The AFL Rising Star award was awarded to Jared Rivers of Melbourne.
• The Wooden Spoon was "awarded" to Richmond for coming last.

• The St Kilda Saints recorded a 10-match winning streak between rounds 1-10 inclusive, thus making it their best winning streak in the history of the club. (Additionally, the club won all four of its preseason games) The streak was ended by bitter rivals the Sydney Swans in round 11.
• A brawl broke out between rivals Hawthorn and Essendon in the round 11 match, after which every player involved copped suspensions. Only one Bomber copped a suspension (Justin Murphy) whilst the rest were Hawks players. The game is widely known as the "Line in the Sand Game," as the brawls sparked in the third quarter after Hawthorn players were urged at a half-time address by club legend Dermott Brereton to metaphorically draw such a line, as he thought the young Hawks were being physically intimidated by the more experienced Bombers.
• On Saturday, 28 August 2004 (round 22), the Brisbane Lions set a most unusual VFL/AFL record. On that day, the 22-man Brisbane Lions squad had collectively played 3,718 senior career games, and had collectively scored 3,373 senior career goals.[1]
  • The 22 players were Jason Akermanis, Simon Black, Daniel Bradshaw, Jonathan Brown, Blake Caracella, Robert Copeland. Richard Hadley, Shaun Hart, Chris Johnson, Clark Keating, Nigel Lappin, Justin Leppitsch, Alastair Lynch, Dylan McLaren, Craig McRae, Mal Michael, Tim Notting, Martin Pike, Luke Power, Chris Scott, Michael Voss, and Darryl White.
