Classical philology

Classical philology is the study of the language systems of Latin, specifically ancient Latin, of Ancient Greek and Sanskrit. It is called classical philology due to the use of the term Classics to refer to the general studies of ancient Greece and Rome. Classical philology is also highly intertwined with the study of the literature of Greek and Roman antiquity. Sanskrit can also be grouped under this heading as it is considered to be one of the classical languages of India and, indeed the major classical language of India. It derives much of its status from its use in Hindu texts, specifically the four Vedas. Sanskrit is, however, the classical language of the Indian civilisation, while Ancient Greek and Latin language and literature are foundations of the Western Culture.
