John Arthur Garraty (July 4, 1920December 19, 2007) was an American historian and biographer.

Garraty was educated at Brooklyn College and Columbia University. He taught at Michigan State University before joining the Columbia University History Department in 1959. He served as the president of the Society of American Historians . He retired from teaching at Columbia in 1990.

An author of many textbooks, Garraty's works include the high school history textbook The American Nation, which was co-written by Mark C. Carnes, the school book American History and the American National Biography. He also wrote many biographies, including one about the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt.
