[edit] History and Settlement
The UK is a popular destination for Maltese emmigrants largely due to the two countries historical links. Malta was once part of the British Empire and is one of the few Commonwealth countries where English is the most spoken first language. The Maltese legal system is heavily influenced by that of the UK, and amongst many similarities, vehicles in both Malta and the UK travel on the left hand side of the road.[3] The 2001 Census recorded 30,178 Maltese-born people as living in the UK, however it is unknown how many British born people of Maltese descent exist. In 2001 there were more Maltese emmigrants living in the UK than any other country on earth (almost three times more than its closest competition, the 11,507 Maltese born people living in Australia).[1]
[edit] Diaspora
The Maltese community in the United Kingdom has been an extremely long established one, and now a days there are many Maltese British people who have migrated abroad. The United States and Canada are both home to Britons of Maltese origin. International US superstar Britney Spears, her sister Jamie Lynn and mother Lynne are all descendants of Maltese British people, as are the equally famous Grammy award winning musicians, Alison Krauss and Bryan Adams.[4]
[edit] Notable individuals
Some Maltese choose to reside in England, such as the esteemed philosopher Dr Edward De Bono. Notable British people of Maltese origin include singers Sharleen Spiteri and Zena McNally, TV personality OJ Borg and model Suzanne Mizzi. Notable non-resident Maltese British people can be seen in the diaspora section above.
