[edit] Life

She was the third daughter of Victor Amadeus II of Savoy (1666 - 1732), Duke of Savoy and future king of Sicily and Sardinia , and his wife Anne Marie of Orléans, daughter of Philippe I of Orléans and Henrietta Anne Stuart.

[edit] Queen of Spain

On November 2, 1701 Maria Louisa, then barely thirteen years old, married the younger brother of her brother-in-law, Philip, duc d'Anjou who had just become king Philip V of Spain .

In 1702 the long and ruinous War of Spanish Succession broke out, and Maria Louise acted as regent in the absence of her husband. Despite her young age, she demonstrated skill in this occupation as she made herself admired in Madrid, while at the same time beginning to create order in the junta and in doing this inspiring others individuals and cities to donate towards the war effort. She had a great influence on her husband, but was herself dominated by the Princess des Ursins.

[edit] Children

The Royal couple had 4 children :

After her death, two of her sons, her youngest and oldest, were to become Kings of Spain.

[edit] Death

She died in 1714 in her twenty-sixth year, as her grandmother Princess Henrietta-Anne of England had in 1670. She was nicknamed La Savoyana by her adoring subjects and was well loved in Spain.
