[edit] Career

Cole joined Southend United in 2005 after helping Grays Athletic earn promotion to the Conference National.

The former West Ham trainee signed for an undisclosed fee after double success at Grays, which saw him play a key role in the club winning both the Conference South title and the FA Trophy.

An exciting and tricky left winger, Cole was much sought after by a number of clubs before the youngster joined the Blues. Despite an inconsistent season in 2005/06, fans saw enough of Cole to realise he is a talent worth being patient for and many were expecting big things of him in the Championship.[2]

After becoming frustrated with the lack of first-team appearances at the beginning of Southend United's 2006/2007 Championship campaign, Cole was loaned out to Northampton Town for a month.[3]

After returning to Southend after his loan spell, Cole found it increasingly hard to break into the first team, making only 4 appearances in the league. This led to Mitchell joining Conference side Stevenage Borough for a five-figure fee. [4]

He became the first Stevenage player to score at Wembley Stadium in the FA Trophy Final on 12 May 2007 which they went onto win 3-2.[5]

Cole went onto make his debut this summer for England National Game XI and ended as the tournament's top scorer after bagging a hat-trick on his debut in the 5-0 win against Scotland and during his 3rd game he scored in the 3-0 win against Wales.

[edit] Personal life

Mitchell has two children with the sister of Chelsea's Joe Cole.[citation needed]
