The word bootstrapping is a highly productive metaphor, denoting a family of diverse phenomena in several sciences, that are related, sharing a common pattern. Mostly, the origin of a complicated phenomenon is explained by assuming an underlying, more basic level "infrastructure", that ceased to exist after the shifting process had taken place. As mentioned, the metaphor is highly productive, thus new manifestations can be discovered or introduced.
