[edit] Welcome

Hello, welcome to Wikipedia. Here are some tasks you can do:

You might find these links helpful in creating new pages or helping with the above tasks: How to edit a page, How to write a great article, Naming conventions, Manual of Style. You should read our policies at some point too.

If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. If you made any edits before you got an account, you might be interested in assigning those to your username. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian!

  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.

[edit] WikiJerk

I nominate this user as a WikiJerk Darkshark0159 (talk) 23:57, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

I'm sorry you feel this way. This should be taken as constructive criticism, not an attack. You have clearly lost your way on Wikipedia. Darkshark0159 (talk) 00:07, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

If you would have read the article, you would realise the difference between Jerk and WikiJerk. I will post here to explain:

A WikiJerk is a wikipedian who has been a great contributor in the past, but has now lost their way. They can be found abusing their privileges and attempting to boss other, smaller users around by belligerently "enforcing" wikirules that have really, put simply, been bent. This includes focusing on irrelevant details, when there are much more important issues at hand. These users feel that they are continuing to help Wikipedia, but the reality is otherwise. While WikiJerks have a history of positive contributions, they now simply hold Wikipedia back from being the best it can be.

In other words, who the hell cares of part of an image is grey-area. Just sod off and let the article be the best it can be.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Darkshark0159 (talkcontribs) 00:12, 21 September 2008

[edit] Wikipedia fork

Hello Superm401, I'm contacting you regarding a Wikipedia fork, and its compliance of. Bahaikipedia uses many of the Wikipedia articles outright, such as [1], [2], etc. I've asked the owner of that website, who has a Wikipedia account User:T0lk, to abide by the GFDL, but for the most part he hasn't really done much. You can see the thread here User_talk:T0lk#Bahaikipedia He's just included a link to Wikipedia in the references section, and also has offered to include a link in the external links section. I see that as a problem because it's seen as one of many references or external links when this is a copyright issue. I've asked him to place a notice such as in the answers.com page, but he's so far refused. He's asked for a third opinion, and that's why I'm writing you. Could you possibly add to the discussion. Regards, -- Jeff3000 (talk) 12:45, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image:YouTube Saari.JPG

Could you offer some advice on the likely copyright holder of this image? The fair use template requests this and I would like to avoid hassle over disputed fair use. --♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 10:23, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Clay Aiken

I missed that the CNN article was still being used as the source. Which incidentally didn't in any capacity reference Perez Hilton. Nevertheless thanks for updating it, though why you had to do so in an insulting manner when you could clearly see the People article existed is beyond me, but whatever. - mixvio (talk) 11:42, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

It's irrelevant to me what another user says about the CNN article. CNN themselves sourced People, not Perez Hilton, ergo their source was People, not Perez Hilton. I reverted the wiki page back to the existing version that has been there all day through a consensus vote and the actions of another admin saying that CNN was a sufficient news source (among the many others that were available.) The wiki page had been referencing CNN and I missed that. What's insulting is coming into a discussion that you didn't have anything to do with and reverting pages that had been established by discussion well before you arrived. - mixvio (talk) 12:00, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
CNN article: http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Music/09/23/clay.aiken.ap/index.html
"The cover of the latest People magazine shows Aiken holding his infant son, Parker Foster Aiken, with the headline: "Yes, I'm Gay." The cover also has the quote: "I cannot raise a child to lie or hide things.""
Bolding mine, showing CNN sourcing People, not Perez Hilton.
Anyway you're really just splitting hairs for ridiculousness' sake, it doesn't change reality of anything on that article. - mixvio (talk) 12:19, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Seeing as how there was no discussion for 5 days, I went ahead and merged Bolivar Peninsula into Bolivar Peninsula, Texas. Please check the results and make any necessary corrections.

[edit] Redirect of Cindy's torment

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Cindy's torment, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Cindy's torment is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Cindy's torment, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. [edit] Hi there

I see that you are part of Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts. I was wondering whether you have some free time in regard to tweaking an existing script that i want to customize to my own liking. Its based on the Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/test-enhanced. I just want to get rid of some tabs from there and add and update a couple because the warnings seem to be a bit old. Let me know if your up to it and then i'll fill you in. I dislike Twinkle and rarely use Firefox so i would find warning tabs at the top of talk pages quite OK. Thanks Monster Under Your Bed (talk) 05:55, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your offer of help, it shouldn't really matter what browser you use. As i said, i just want to tweak the script Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/test-n.js and update it to the now standard. In the existing script, the now outdated {{subst:test}} is used when i need it to be {{subst:uw-test}}. I would appreciate if you can try and do this and see what happens.
Also, in the existing script, the templates test1-4 are used only. I would appreciate if you could cut some of that out so that i can have the following: {{uw-test}}; {{uw-vandalism}} (all the way from level 1-4); the {{uw-bv}} and {{uw-v4im}}. This would do fine if you can make it happen. If you can do this then just in case i need to drop a template or add one, can you please tell me how to do it so i wouldn't need to bother you anymore. See what you can do, no rush here. I'll be fine in the meantime. Thanks Monster Under Your Bed (talk) 09:27, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:IPhoneBill.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:IPhoneBill.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:17, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hi there

Just a follow up from the above discussion and i have added a script to my monobook that seems to be working quite well, i borrowed it from another user and did a lot of tweaking to get it where it is now. There is just one favour i need for you to try when free. With regards to warning a user, i want to not have the pop up box appear when i warn a user, so when i press the relevant tab it appears on the page automatically without me having to fill in the relevant article. Take a look at the script i added and copy it to your page and see whether you can tweak it to disable this function. I have tried but failed. See what you can do, thanks Monster Under Your Bed (talk) 08:28, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks so much for your help, you did it! I thought that was going to be a pain but i found a user who had updated all the warnings to the current standard and you added the finishing touches. What more can i say but give you some cookies :)

[edit] Chesley Sullenberger

Dear Superm401

Thank you very much for trying to improve the contextual information in the Chesley Sullenberger article. I think more context information is needed. I reverted your inclusion, though, because all of the information was unsourced. I feel that the circumstances of the flight are so controversial in debate atm that all info on it should be sourced. I didn't add citation needed tags, because I thought that since this article is under the realms of a current event, it would be best to remove unsourced material. I hope you can insert the info again, considering it was very good in text form, with cites. Thanks for reading, and I hope no bad blood. Terrakyte (talk) 13:15, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the cited info. Terrakyte (talk) 21:31, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] NowCommons: File:DF-SC-82-06566.jpg

File:DF-SC-82-06566.jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:File:DF-SC-82-06566 Bush hostages Iran.JPEG. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[File:DF-SC-82-06566 Bush hostages Iran.JPEG]]. Note that this is an automated message to inform you about the move. This bot did not copy the image itself. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 13:53, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

the reason why i erased everything on the lake padden page was because i was editing and it wasnt about the tone, i though it got erased because it all was gone in the edit:lake padden except a couple of strange code things. i deleted the code things and then on my talk it says i was vandalizing it! my own creation! so then i just left it alone. the reason why i said those things to riotrocket8676 was becuase i typed a whole bunch in the Everett, WA talk then i put it in my watch list. later that day i saw that it said he deleted it, i was furious, i thought he was a mean guy or a vandalizer. so i typed that on his talk then a few minutes later i found out that you can go to past pages and just get it back. i fixed it, apoligized, so did he and now we are friends. see, im still learning. what else do u want to know? how did u find out about these things so quick? [edit] Physical force Irish republicanism

I have removed your proposed deletion template from this article. While those exact four words in that order are rarely, though occasionally, used by academics variations on the term are. For example "physical force republicanism" "IRA" (non-IRA related results for the same term) is widely used in relation to militant Irish republicanism, but Physical force republicanism would be a misleading page title in my opinion, as it isn't Ireland specific. im helping the Thrash metal page get above a B quality for the wikiproject metal. u already know im trying to get pictures but im having trouble. those links u put in my discussion wernt that helpful, i didnt understand any of it. In Projects I'm doing now there are five pictures im trying to get, but without a copyright or a way to find permission to use it. im not having trouble with the metallica picture though, im asking right now at metallica.com for a picture they have on they're website. I dont know where to look at all and i barely know anything about copyright but im trying my best. plus i was wondering how when you upload a picture to not make it say "I, the copyright holder..." because if i do get the pictures im not the copyright holder. i also checked out the copyright tags discussion page and saw there are different copyright tags. so im just asking for some really helpful tips or a guide in the right direction so i can get this thing done. [edit] I need your mentorship

Hi,

I need help from an experienced Wikipedian, and I saw your name over at WP:ADOPT.

I need your advice concerning WP:WPOOK, which I've been coordinating. The set of pages the project concerns is listed at Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge#Projected outline, and has grown to about 500 articles in the encyclopedia.

The goals of the WikiProject are:

  1. Increase awareness of readers of the existence of the outlines on Wikipedia
  2. Complete the existing outlines
  3. Create an outline for every subject that is extensive enough to benefit from having an outline (core subjects and major or extensive fields). There are thousands of these.
  4. Recruit as many editors to work on these as possible (we need thousands of editors working on these)
  5. Surpass portals in number by the end of the summer, and leave them in the dust by the end of the year
  6. Get the major outline subject areas displayed on the Main Page (in place of or in addition to the portal links at the top of the page)
  7. Increase the OOK to higher quality than Britannica's Outline of Knowledge (published in its Propaedia volume).

I'm very interested in your comments on how to achieve these goals.

Also I'm interested in every possible way of reaching readers and editors of Wikipedia. How can I get the most eyes and typing fingers on Wikipedia's outlines? Contacting editors directly without a reason relevant to them is spam, which I'd like to avoid. There are 75,000 regular editors on Wikipedia, and I want to contact all of them. So how do I do it? Directly or indirectly, I don't care which, piecemeal or all-at-once, all methods are fine with me. But I've got to find ways. I need your help.

I would also like to know how to find or attract editors to create new outlines. And I need advice on finding editors to help write the new outline article mentioned above (it needs to be fleshed out, completely referenced, and brought to featured article status).

Please recommend anyone you know who might be interested in sinking their teeth into a project like this. Or ways to reach groups of editors. Or ways to reach all editors. I welcome any and all recommendations and advice you might have.

And any thoughts on attaining the WikiProject goals above.

I look forward to your reply on my talk page.
