Wintersun is a Finnish metal band, founded by ex-Ensiferum frontman Jari Mäenpää. The band's genre is hard to define, as their music has many influences from different genres, such as power metal,[1] folk metal,[2][3] progressive metal, melodic death metal and melodic black metal.

[edit] History
The first Wintersun album was supposed to be a side project of Ensiferum member Jari Mäenpää. However, since the Ensiferum European tour was scheduled simultaneously with the recording of Wintersun, Mäenpää had to choose between his booked recording time for Wintersun and Ensiferum; he chose Wintersun and was forced to leave Ensiferum behind. Wintersun was produced and performed solely by the multi-instrumentalist Mäenpää himself, with the help of only a session drummer, Kai Hahto. On September 13, 2004, Wintersun was released through Nuclear Blast Records, with a live DVD released after only their fifth concert.[4]
According to their official website, the band started to record their next full-length, entitled Time, at Sonic Pump Studios in May 2006, but was delayed due to computer difficulties.[5][6] On 27 February 2009, Mäenpää announced on his website that Wintersun has cancelled all 2009 shows. The reason for this is further personal and technical problems relating to production of Time, the completion of which he says must take priority.
